The holidays might be past us but nasty weather, colds, and flu’s certainly aren’t. This year the Washington D.C. metro region has seen high rates of winter illness, much of it originating in the workplace. Taking simple precautions in the cleanliness of your office will not only save your employees from getting sick, but also save you the cost of their absence.

Below are a few areas to pay special attention to in the workplace this winter season:

While your carpets may look pretty – a winter’s worth of dirt, dander, germs and odor has permeated deep into their fibers. The more the foot traffic, the more materials are released into the air resulting in poor indoor air quality, which doesn’t help those who suffer from allergies and asthma conditions.

To clean your carpets you need a professional carpet cleaner who uses the right equipment and processes to extract the dirt and debris inside your carpet fibers. While there are a myriad of carpet cleaning options to choose from, it is best to receive guidance from a trained cleaning technician.

Similar to carpets your upholstery can also be a breeding ground for dirt and debris that can be harmful for you and the environment. While vacuuming and performing first-aid on spills are important, it is even more critical to have your upholstery deep cleaned each year.

If your upholstery has removable cushions then you may (depending on what the manufacturers label recommends) be able to machine wash the fabrics in cold water. If so, then we recommend turning the fabric inside out to wash as this can prevent colors from fading.

For removable covers that do not have a label, it is recommended to have them dry cleaned by a professional cleaning company.

High Dusting

High Dusting

According to the EPA, poor air quality is one of the largest environmental threats to our country. Hazardous pollutants and buildups can be in areas you would least suspect, especially in hard to reach areas that require frequent high dusting.

Such areas can include, but are not limited to:

  • Ceilings
  • Airducts
  • Lighting Fixtures
  • Fans
  • Roof overhangs
  • Skylights
  • Atriums
  • Ledges

While it is important to dust your office on a frequent basis, it is also imperative that you have a cleaning company high dust in hard to reach areas. Such companies are able to use a ladder or a lift to dust these areas and help prevent hazardous buildups that can lead to environmental health concerns.
