CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH: ENABLE MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

By : Mister Kleen October 9, 2023 Comments off

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and Mister Kleen is sharing information about four key behaviors that federal agencies are promoting.

These four key cybersecurity behaviors are:

  1. Create strong passwords and use a password manager
  2. Enable multi-factor authentication
  3. Update your software
  4. Recognize and report phishing attempts

This week we’re focusing on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which is sometimes called two-factor authentication or two-step verification.

WHY USE MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

MFA offers another layer of security by requiring a second method of confirming your identity when you log into your accounts. When you enable MFA, you are usually required to enter a code sent to your phone or email, or through an authenticator app. This helps prevent unauthorized users from accessing your accounts, even if they have your password.

HOW TO TURN ON MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency offers these easy steps for turning on MFA for your accounts and apps.

  1. Go to Settings. It may be called Account Settings, Settings & Privacy or similar.
  2. Look for and turn on MFA.  It may be called two-factor authentication, two-step authentication or similar.
  3. Confirm. Select which MFA method to use from the options provided by each account or app. Examples are:
    1. Receiving a numeric code by text or email
    2. Using an authenticator app: These phone apps generate a new code every 30 seconds. Use this code to complete logging in.
    3. Biometrics: This uses our facial recognition or fingerprints to confirm our identities.
