Beware of Job Interview Scams: Protect Yourself from Fraud

As a longtime cleaning specialist in secure facilities, Mister Kleen recognizes the importance of cybersecurity in high-security environments and actively informs both employees and clients about the latest cyberthreats and best practices.

There has been a substantial increase in job interview scams in recent years, and one of the most recent cyberthreats is targeting job seekers through emails and texts. In this latest scam, an email is sent inviting someone to schedule an interview for a job, according to a recent Cyberguy blog post

The fraudulent email or text contains a link designed to lure recipients to a fake interview scheduling page. This link, however, redirects users to a malicious website that attempts to infect their devices with malware disguised as a “CRM application” download.

This malware uses your computer’s resources to “mine” cryptocurrency by solving complex math problems to earn online currencies like Bitcoin.

According to the Cyberguy blog post, “this process requires a lot of computational power, which can cause your system to slow down drastically. You might notice your computer becoming unresponsive, running hotter than usual, or consuming more power.”

How to Avoid Job Scams

  • Be wary of unsolicited offers: Be cautious of job offers that arrive unexpectedly, especially through email or text.
  • Verify the sender: Research the company and the sender’s contact information. Look for inconsistencies in email addresses or phone numbers.
  • Never share sensitive information: Legitimate employers will never ask for your Social Security number, bank details, or passwords during the initial stages of the hiring process.
  • Check for red flags:
    • Poor grammar and spelling in emails or texts
    • Requests for immediate payments
    • Unusual or suspicious domain names
    • Offers that seem too good to be true
  • Report suspicious activity: If you suspect a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Remember: Legitimate employers will always prioritize your security and privacy. If something feels off, trust your instincts and err on the side of caution.
