Spring is here. Now is the perfect time to schedule a spring cleaning of your carpets.

While the appearance of your carpets matters, it is also important that you restoratively clean your carpets to ensure your indoor environment is as healthy as can be. This means making sure your carpets are properly cleaned and extracted of all the winter salt, sand, dirt and debris that is currently trapped within their fibers, which will continue to pollute your environment if not removed.

Not sure which company to hire to restoratively clean your carpets? Here are three questions to have answered before hiring a carpet cleaning company.

What about the process to use when cleaning your carpets?

Wet cleaning via hot water extraction is the preferable option to go with if you haven’t had your carpets cleaned in a while. With this method, a hot water cleaning solution under high pressure is forced into the carpet and then extracted immediately back out of your carpet. This process can be performed using either a portable machine or truck mount.

If you have carpet tiles or sensitive wiring underneath your carpet, then it is recommended that you go with a low moisture encapsulation (LME) method.

The LME method is a newer technology in which encapsulation carpet chemicals are manufactured with ingredients that do not leave a harmful sticky residue on the carpet. They also have a crystalline polymer included that is designed to trap and hold any remaining soil that is left behind in the cleaning process. When the carpet dries, the crystalline and soil are vacuumed up during the next dry cycle.

The LME method is also recommended to be a good interim cleaning/maintenance process in between hot water extraction cleanings. Encapsulation cleaning keeps carpets cleaner for longer periods of time compared to other methods, and this method also avoids the drying time of carpet extractions as carpets can be immediately walked on.

Other options to consider can include:

Cylindrical Cleaning: A less aggressive process for short piled carpets using a cylindrical coil rotary brush designed to extract lint and debris.

Rotary and Extraction Cleaning: Using this method, matted stains are easily deep cleaned and restored as special rotary extraction power heads are used to remove all remaining residue. Ultimately, the rotary and extractions method can be an excellent choice when seeking to restore heavily soiled carpets back to their original condition.

Dry Cleaning: Also known as “very low moisture” (VLM) systems, as an absorbent (often a biodegradable compound) is evenly spread over carpets then brushed or scrubbed in. When using this method, carpets can be cleaned during business hours as they dry quicker. Also, the dry cleaning and VLM system is less labor intensive and better for the environment as trips to the janitor’s closet to fill and dump water are no longer needed.

Of course, it is always recommended that you seek professional advice from a reputable and certified company of which process to use to avoid these common eight (8) mistakes, which can destroy your carpets.
